Endoscopy
Through endoscopy we can inspect multiple organs from the inside. The endoscope is the tool that is used by the internist or gastroenterologist. It is a long fine hose with a small light and camera at the end. Other small tools that can be used to sample biopsy specimen or remove polyps can be introduced through the endoscope. At PoliDirect we perform the following endoscopic examinations:
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) of the large intestine. We will inspect the inside of your large intestines and the last part of your small intestines. The inspection is done using a looking device called an endoscope, a flexible hose with a small light and a camera at the end. The light provides good sight of the inside of your intestines for the doctor, and the camera is connected to a monitor for the doctor to follow the examination.
We can detect almost all deviations of the large intestine through colonoscopy. It is an internal examination with pros and cons. An important advantage of colonoscopy is that the doctor can perform minor surgery on the spot, so often colonoscopy is the examination of choice.

Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy is an laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) of the inside of the esphagus, the stomach and the first part of the small intestines (duodenum). The examination is done using an endoscope. The doctor inserts the endoscope through your mouth and esophagus into the stomach and duodenum. A small light and a camera are fixed at the end of the endoscope. The light makes that the doctor can see the inside of your esophaqgus and stomach well. Pictures from the camera will appear on a monitor. The doctor can see most all deviations of the esophagus and stomach by using gastroscopy. Furthermore, he/she can determine or exclude some disorders of the small intestines because the first part of the deodenum can be inspected as well. A gastroscopy is an internal examination with pros and cons. An important advantage of gastroscopy is that the doctor can perform minor surgery on the spot, which often makes it the examination of choice.
Sigmoidoscopy
The gastroenterologist uses sigmoidoscopy to inspect the interior lining of the last 50-60 centimeter of the large intestines, to detect or exclude possible deviations.
The examination is done using an endoscope. A small light and a camera are fixed at the end of the hose. The light makes that the doctor can inspect the interior lining of your intestines well. The camera is connected to a monitor, allowing the doctor to follow the examination.
A sigmoidoscopy follows the same process as the colonoscopy, except for the fact that only the last part of the large intestines are examined.
